Science Night at the Islesboro Community Center. More details to come.
Mrs. J. T. Atterbury was the original owner and inhabitant of what is today Islesboro Central School. Mrs. Atterbury built the current structure in 1928 as a summer cottage. The stone which adorns the face of the building was blasted from the original site and led to the estate being known as "Rock Ledge" in later years.
Mrs. Atterbury and her husband were from New York and were prominent summer residents of Islesboro. Both played significant roles in the socialization of the island shortly after the turn of the century. In 1912, the Atterburys joined with others to form The Islesboro Golf Links Trust. Mr. Atterbury was the president of the trust, while Mrs. Atterbury was the president of the Women's Branch of the trust. This Trust later merged with yachting and tennis interests on the island to form the current Tarratine Club.
Mrs. Atterbury has become famous on the island and around the region as many still claim to encounter her occasionally at the school. Late night visits to pick up books or needed items have led to many a spirited encounter. The legend of Mrs. Atterbury has been written about locally for years and was the subject of a 2002 Bangor Daily News article entitled "School Spirit." Mrs. Atterbury's friendly presence is just one of the things that makes Islesboro Central School a unique place.
